An international team of scientists, conducting one of the largest coral reef research projects, declares that urgent protection is needed, because current protection zones are in the wrong place. NTAs, or not take areas are crucial for the protection of coral reefs, allowing recruits and fish populations to thrive. Where these areas are, is a carefully determined procedure.

That said, it didn't surprise me that the scientists found that the current NTAs are in the wrong place, as they were established 30 to 40 years ago. The group of scientists said that their research shows that existing NTAs should stay, but new ones need to be established as new problems threaten our reefs. This makes logical sense, global warming and ocean acidification were probably not highly considered aspects in setting up the last areas of protection.
