At least nine snorkelers have died recently in Hawaii within a two week period. A number of the deceased were very experienced swimmers, even lifeguards in some cases. While these mysterious deaths remain officially unexplained, "there is interest in looking at the mechanics of certain types of masks" according to Bridget Velasco of the Hawaii Department of Health.
While growing in popularity, the full-faced snorkel mask remains a relatively new recreational tool for snorkelers, and it is now believed that the build-up of carbon dioxide inside the masks may be causing some snorkelers to lose consciousness leading to possible fatalities in these cases. While the investigation remains in its early stages, the girlfriend of one experienced swimmer who recently drowned while using one of these masks is contemplating a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
