Whilst working with Sir David Attenborough on a conservation documentary about wildlife in the Commonwealth, the Queen of England apparently took a keen interest in the crises surrounding single-use plastics—so much so that she has called for a ban on single-use plastics, such as plastic straws, from all Royal estates. Buckingham Palace announced the new plans to deal with single-use plastic waste, and a spokesman for Buckingham Palace said, "Across the organization, the Royal Household is committed to reducing its environmental impact." The plans include banning straws and bottles outright in staff dining halls and phasing them out in public spaces. According to The Telegraph, "Britons use 7.7bn single-use plastic water bottles a year and fewer than half are recycled, meaning that 16 million bottles are binned every day in Britain."
