DPG is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Italian underwater photographer David Salvatori in a diving accident off Sicily over the weekend. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his wife Maria Cristina di Palma, his family and his friends.
A charming, respected and greatly admired shooter, David was awarded for many memorable images and had a reputation for sharing his knowledge with his fellow photographers. In 2019, he captured the winning picture in the DPG-hosted World Oceans Day Photo Competition—offering a fascinating account of the story behind the image—and in 2020, for the following edition of the contest, he generously lent his expertise by joining the judging panel.
David was passionate about protecting the marine life he photographed so brilliantly, and his book Scatti Sommersi (Submerged Shots), part of a series on the masters of Italian underwater photography, was published only a few months ago. I had the pleasure of writing a few words in a foreword for the book, and as a reward for my greatly appreciated efforts, I was looking forward to enjoying David’s favorite beer—“a small, excellent production from Sicily!”—with him one fine day…
Salute, David. Rest in peace. You will be greatly missed.
